MetLife Retirement & Income Solutions
For decades, employers have been providing retirees with the means to prepare for – and live comfortably in – retirement. MetLife’s 2025 Enduring Retirement Model Study shows that, although U.S. retirement benefits are constantly evolving, the commitments made by employers to continue to provide these benefits is unwavering. The study highlights:
Despite helping to prepare workers for a secure retirement, 90% of plan sponsors say they have workers delaying retirement because they feel financially trapped. In fact, plan sponsors expect retirement ages to increase as older workers delay retirement out of financial necessity.
Almost half of plan sponsors believe the commonly used definition of “retirement” – the process of ceasing to work for pay – needs to be redefined or expanded.
In the coming years, with macroeconomic forces, demographic changes, regulatory changes and technological advancements, the American workforce is expected to change demonstrably. Regardless of those changes, workplace retirement benefits – the underpinning of a secure retirement – will endure.
