Life Insurance FAQs

While having life insurance provided by your employer is a great benefit, it’s possible that it may not be enough to adequately provide for your family. Additional life insurance can give your family greater financial security if you are no longer here to earn a paycheck.

Premium payment methods vary by employer. Contact your human resources department for more information.

  • You get competitive group rates and a wide range of coverage options to choose from.
  • Proceeds are generally income tax free and can be paid to your beneficiary in a lump-sum payment.

With portability and conversion, you can take your life insurance benefits with you without a gap in coverage. You can continue your Group Life insurance coverage with MetLife should you leave your employer for any reason. Competitive rates apply but will likely be higher than your current rates. MetLife will bill you directly.2

A claim needs to be filed with MetLife upon the death of the insured. Please call MetLife customer service at 866-548-7139. The claim form will be sent to the beneficiary on file. Proceeds are paid to your beneficiary through a tax-free death benefit. If you do not designate a beneficiary, claim payment will be distributed following the facility of payment provisions outlined in the certificate of insurance. If the total amount of your combined life benefits is $100,000 or less, and if MetLife can verify the death through other means, the benefit may be paid without submission of a death certificate. Please note this does not apply to dependent claims, AD&D claims, foreign claims, or claims with certain causes of death.
