Terminology:
Agencies - Any Government agencies and other entities entitled by law to participate in the FEGLI Program pursuant to the Act and Regulations.
Annuitant – a person who receives regular payments from a pension or an annuity investment.
FEGLI - The Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program is a life insurance program for Federal and Postal employees and annuitants, authorized by law (Chapter 87 of Title 5, United States Code). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) administers the Program and sets the premiums. The FEGLI regulations are in Title 5 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 870.
Insured Person - An Employee (who has not declined FEGLI coverage pursuant to the Act and Regulations), annuitant (as defined in Regulations), compensationer (as defined in Regulations), or family member (as defined in the Act). Absent applicable Federal law, the definition of spouse for purposes of defining a family member will be determined in accordance with applicable state law.
Office of Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (OFEGLI). OPM has a contract with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) to provide this life insurance. MetLife has an administrative office called the Office of Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (OFEGLI). OFEGLI is the contractor that adjudicates claims under the FEGLI Program.
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The Office of Personnel Management has the overall responsibility for administration of the FEGLI Program.
OPM Retirement Services – the office with handles has access to the FEGLI life insurance records for annuitants or compensationer prior to a Life claim being filed with OFEGLI.
