MetLife Commitment to Privacy
MetLife strongly believes in the responsible use of Personal Information we collect and is committed to protecting all information we retain. To further this commitment, we have adopted this MetLife Legal Plans Privacy Notice (“Privacy Notice”) to tell you how MetLife Legal Plans and its affiliates (“MetLife, “we”, “our”, “, “us”) collect, use, share, and protect the Personal Information we obtain in connection with the administration of the legal plan you have enrolled into through your sponsoring employer (“Employer MLP”) to provide you with the contracted services of legal insurance (“Services”), and for other purpose to which you have given your consent.
Information covered by this Privacy Notice
This Privacy Notice only applies to activities described herein that support MetLife Legal Plans offered to customer’s residing in Canada and that is essential to fulfill our contractual and regulatory obligations. It does not apply to Services provided by other companies or organizations to which we link, or we/ you interact with, including your Employer MLP. MetLife is, therefore, not responsible for the content or activities provided on third-party websites and/or other entities, nor for their practices regarding the collection, transfer, processing, storage and use of your Personal Information. Personal information is information that identifies or reasonably can be used to identify you.
This Privacy Notice applies to Personal Information we collect about you, your spouse, your dependents, and other third parties ( “you”, “your”), (i) to the extent necessary to provide you with the Services and (ii) as permitted by, and to comply with any applicable law and/or regulatory requirement.
How we collect Personal Information:
We collect Personal Information from the following sources (i) directly from you (ii) from your Employer or from(iii) other third parties. For example, we collect personal information when you:
- Apply for or obtain a MetLife product or service.
- Register and login to access your account or claim information.
- Request to have a MetLife representative contact you.
- Request to receive information about our products or services.
- Instruct us to perform a transaction.
- Participate in any MetLife promotion or survey.
- Request customer or technical support.
- Use our website or Apps where Personal Information is required or collected.
We limit the collection of Personal Information to that which is necessary to fulfill the administration of the legal plan, our fulfil our contractual obligations, and for other purposes to which you have given consent.
Your Consent
By submitting personal information to us you agree that we may collect, use, maintain, retain, transfer and disclose such Personal Information in accordance with this Privacy Notice and as permitted or required by applicable laws.
Subject to legal and contractual requirements, you may refuse or withdraw your consent at any time by contacting MetLife at the address provided below in the “Question or Concerns?” section of this Privacy Notice. If you refuse or withdraw your consent, you acknowledge that we may not be able to provide you, or continue to provide you, with certain Services, products or information.
We may collect Personal Information from you indirectly when you have given other organizations, including the employer MLP, permission to share it. We may also collect Personal Information through third parties you have authorized to provide to us. The information we receive from other organization/entities depends on your consent options as given to them.
If you provide us with Personal Information of another individual, you represent to us that you have that individual’s consent to allow us to collect, use, maintain, retain, transfer and disclose that Personal Information in accordance with this Privacy Notice.
You are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the Personal Information that you submit to us.
Personal Information We Collect
- Name, Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN), Legal Plan Member unique identifier, home address, telephone number, email address, user login id and password.
- Legal Plans information, including employee coverage effective date, Plan code and local code (i.e. numeric identifiers), and insurance and claims information.
- Account number, bank account number, or any other financial information. Financial or payment information may be collected by one of our vendors or partners and, if stored, would be stored by them and not MetLife.
- Internet Protocol (IP) address, browsing history, search history, geolocation, and interactions with our websites, Apps or advertisements. Your location information is collected by our Apps only with your permission through use of geolocation services.
- Communications with you, such as through email, social media and our “Contact Us” feature.
Information We Collect Through Technology
We collect information through technology to enhance our ability to serve you. For example, when you come to one of our websites or Apps, we may collect your IP address. An IP address is often associated with the portal you used to enter the Internet, like your ISP (Internet Service Provider), company, association, or university. At times, we also use IP addresses to study the frequency that our visitors visit various areas of our websites. We may combine this information with Personal Information. Finally, our websites do not respond to browser Do Not Track signals or other similar mechanisms.
Cookies
We use cookies for a variety of reasons such as essential operations, site navigation, and to improve your experience when you visit our website. Additionally, we use cookies for analyzing visitor behavior on our webpages and to provide you with specific content, such as videos on our website.
How We Use Your Personal Information
We use your Personal Information in connection with the administration of the legal plan you have enrolled into through your sponsoring Employer (“Employer MLP”), to provide you with the contracted services, and for other purpose to which you have given your consent.,.
For example, we may use your personal information to:
- Determine your eligibility for our services
- Administer your account, transaction, claims information or issue reimbursements.
- Authenticate your identity to enable registration through our website and Apps, and to provide you with access to your account or claims information.
- Respond to your service requests, requests for information, and rights requests.
- Manage your preferences or privacy choices.
- Provide you with technical support.
- For other everyday business purposes, such as to operate, evaluate and improve our products and services, product development, and website and App administration.
- Detecting security incidents, protecting against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity.
- Analyze your use of our websites and Apps and debugging to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality of our websites and Apps.
- Comply with and enforce applicable legal and regulatory requirements, legal processes, contractual obligations, terms of use, and our policies.
Transfer of Personal Information:
Your Personal Information may be used, stored, processed, disclosed, retained and transferred through countries other than your home country, in which cases the personal information is bound by the laws of these countries. By requesting our Services, you consent to such use, storage, processing, disclosure, retention and transfer.
How We Share Your Personal Information
MetLife may share Personal Information with its affiliates, and third parties that we work with. We will only share Personal Information to help us provide a product or Service to you, and as described in this Privacy Notice. We may also disclose information about you or others we have collected personal information about to our auditors, regulators, legal advisors, or to respond to a subpoena or request from a government agency.
Your Privacy Choices
We want you to know that you can always decline to provide us with some of your Personal Information. If you do not provide us with all necessary Personal Information, we will still do our best to provide you with our Services, however it may not be possible to do so.
You may update your marketing permissions and contact preferences at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message. We will obtain your consent prior to sending any marketing communications.
Your Rights
You have the following rights:
- The right to be informed of the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information.
- The right to access your Personal Information.
- The right to correct your Personal Information if it’s inaccurate or incomplete.
- The right to withdraw your consent.
To request access to your Personal Information and correction of your Personal Information please contact us by submitting a request using privacy@metlife.com.
You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at privacy@metlife.com, and, subject to any applicable legal or contractual restrictions which we must fulfill, we will cease to collect, use, retain and disclose your Personal Information after the withdrawal of your consent. If you withdraw your consent, or do not provide us with all necessary Personal Information, we will still do our best to provide you with our products or services, however it may not be possible to do so.
To process your rights requests and to help protect your privacy and maintain security, we will take steps to verify your identity before granting you access to your Personal Information or complying with your request. We may require you to provide additional Personal Information to us.
Retention of Personal Information
MetLife's Global Record Retention Schedule establishes the retention periods for our records consistent with MetLife business needs and global legal and regulatory requirements. MetLife determines our retention periods based on criteria such as: (a.) the ongoing nature and/or the duration of our relationship with you, (b.) to meet legal requirements to which we are subject, including required regulatory retention periods (c.) whether retention is advisable to comply with applicable statutes of limitation, regulatory investigations and defense to legal claims. The applicable retention period determines how long the information may be kept before being securely disposed of. Certain information may be deleted following the required retention period and barring any regulatory investigations and defense to legal claims.
Security Measures to Safeguard your Personal Information
The security and confidentiality of your Personal Information is extremely important to us. That is why we have technical, administrative, and physical security measures and safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access and improper use.
For example, the areas of our website that enable or require you to submit personal information online use encryption to protect that information. We also review our security procedures periodically to consider appropriate new technology and updated methods. However, despite our reasonable efforts, no security measure is ever perfect or impenetrable.
Updating your Personal Information
We make every effort to ensure that the Personal Information we collect is accurate, complete, and as up to date as possible to properly satisfy the purposes for which it is to be used. It is important that you promptly notify us of any change to your contact information. If we are unable to verify your Personal Information or contact you, we may be limited in our ability to provide you with our products and services.
You can contact your employer directly or login into your account to update your Personal Information.
Changes to this Privacy Notice
We may change this Privacy Notice from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised Privacy Notice with a new “Last Updated” date. Any changes to this Privacy Notice will become effective when posted unless indicated otherwise.
